And ... seems like Kelly is the first to use in fashion-space?

A Turkish Instagrammer has been using it since at least 2022: https://www.instagram.com/midimaliststyle?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

But Kelly may be the first to use it in an English-language publication.

I appreciate this from you two!! Sogole Kane mentioned on my post its prevalence in the interior design space! I take umbridge with Andersen saying it’s boring and grey 😉😂

>"We’re a lifestyle solution”

oh, ffs. These people.

>standby is the noun

Indeed, but subject to widespread, mmm, variation. The best mnemonic/heuristic I know of is to try to make it progressive: are you standbying? setupping? No? You're probably standing by or setting up. I saw this tons in tech, to the point where one of my writers once asked whether the space-less version was a new convention:

Re footnote 4, the original Mini was made by the British Motor Corporation. "Cooper" was the name given to various souped-up models of Mini. The Cooper Car Company did indeed design these models but it was not the maker of the Mini (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini).

While reading this, what popped into my aural-neural synapses was "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini"— a 1960 novelty ditty.

I agree with all the comments on AppleTV+ v HBO. Loved wearing midis.

"Itty bitty kitty committee" is a "folk" group noun for a bunch of cute lil cats. At least so it was when I grew up, mid-20th century. I think it plays well in its new midi application, although my reaction to "midi" is, and probably always will be, something that is middling --- not intriguing but safe-ish.

And “itty bitty titty committee" is what we called girls with small breasts. The expression was turned into the title of a 2007 indie film. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itty_Bitty_Titty_Committee

I’ve had occasion to think about midi recently because New York Times Spelling Bee game accepts it as a word. I’ve always thought that they have in mind not the skirt, but the digital musical interface.

They accept MINI, too -- probably the skirt, not the car. P.S. Mazel tov on your forthcoming book! To everyone who reads the comments: Pre-order Ben's book! https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691262291/gobsmacked

Yeah, definitely the skirt, but what do you think they have in mind with midi? And many thanks for the plug.

"Itty bitty shitty committee" is what certain recovery people refer to as the often less than helpful voices in our heads.

With midi it's gotta be the skirt.
