Jon Carroll used to talk about his charity, called "The Untied Way." He would give $20 directly to as many homeless, obviously in need people, as he could. No strings. I try to follow his example In my own way.
I'm a nominal, lapsed, atheist Jew. The most important takeaway from my upbringing is similar to yours.
The most depressing aspect about Republican/"Conservative" ideology is that empathy is seen as weak, non-productive—bad. And so many people are fine with erasing "DEI" initiatives—until it affects them. "Wait…I'm an American-born, White, Christian manly male. This shouldn't be putting ME out of a job!"
One of your best articles yet. Beautifully composed, elegantly substantiated, and worthy of a kidney donation. But, wait, we know each other. :) Seriously, that was a profound piece in so many ways. I loved the Jewish 7-step program. Made me think of Miss Nancy (not you) and Brother Buzz and AA all at once. Well done.
Thanks for footnote 6. Gave me a chuckle, because I so agree.
That line from the NYT story also stuck with me when I read it, Nancy.

Moral regress.
A wonderful, relevant article.
Thanks, Dan. Jon has been a friend of mine for many years. I’m seeing him tomorrow and will pass along your comment to him.
I'm envious. Please tell Jon, he's made a difference.

I frequently offer to donate my wisdom to others, but for reasons I don't understand, it only seems to piss them off. Great article, Nancy.
This is a very good piece. I can't make any jokes because if I do my kidneys will fail. Instant Karma is a thing.
I loved this piece!
Thanks, Diana!
