I'm no expert, but my guess is that the earlier meaning recorded by Green is an unrelated separate invention.

Hmm. I detect a through line.

I apologize in advance for my crude sense of humor, but when you quoted, “Wait, do you know what this actually meant?” “It’s literally fucking without a condom.” “And you call yourselves linguists?” I couldn’t believe that in the last line the author completely missed the opportunity to add the adjective “cunning” before “linguists.” #justsaying

I would never rawdog an examination. I would wing it. I would play it by ear. Or, as I did a couple of very stupid times in college, I would blow it off. Also: "The first time I went to sleepaway camp, in Malibu," ....

Isn't "bareback" an earlier sexual meaning of "raw dog?"

I checked Urban Dictionary—they both have the same original meaning. I'm guessing "raw dog" sounds cruder and more shocking, and so, more popular.

And "Barebacking a cake" would be really dissonant.

Having been a graduate student myself once, I can only imagine the atmosphere of a crowd of them, all sharing THE THINGS THEY KNOW!

But rawdog it is. I, too, eagerly await the broligarchs using the term .

My real "what are we doing here, folks?" moment w/r/t this year's ADS was "Luigi" winning political word of the year. Really? It's just... a guy's name. I guess you could use it as a verb in the same way you could say "I got Sirhanned!" but I'd argue "deny delay depose" is the *wordplay* associated with that whole ordeal.

Ultimately "Luigi is a word of the year contender," much like "Luigi Mangione is hot" (lmao no), is a statement I cannot possibly take at face value except as code for "I think CEO murder is awesome but don't wanna say it directly."

I can't find all the cites right now, but it's my understanding that "Luigi" was chosen because of its linguistic productivity: Luigi-pilled, Luigification, etc.

Made me wonder about the background of the title of one of Sam Peckinpah's violent films, "Straw Dogs".

So interesting that you were tasked with planting ice plants, which kids are now, at places like Nature Bridge in Marin Headlands, encouraged to roll over in an attempt to destroy without picking (the idea being the plants if pulled will just reroot and spread wherever they land, they're so invasive).

Yes, I've heard that the consensus has shifted on ice plants! They were a new and exciting remedy back in my camp era.

You know you’re old when your first thought on hearing rawdog become so casually used for nonsexual things is “let’s just turn ALL sexual terms into everyday terms.” /s

I’m not sure why that term triggers me the way it does. Perhaps it immediately produces imagery at odds with simply eating cake directly from a platter. Or whatever. Interesting to learn that the origins were nonsexual!

We, too, have friends whose homes have been lost and/or had to evacuate. One person whose home was one of three left standing on their street realized that the smoke and nearby chemicals from the fire means it will never be inhabitable. Not to mention the community lost. 💔

It’s times like these that we realize deeply how important it is to know your neighbors and be on good terms with family or friends who can take you in. Disasters become very local quickly.

I found this article on home hardening and preparation for wildfire to be useful advice: https://readyforwildfire.org/prepare-for-wildfire/hardening-your-home/

I knew nothing about the word rawdog till now, so thank you. Also, my sympathies and tears for LA and all the people dealing with these horrible fires. 💔
