Here in East Poisonspider it's still the other way around. If you try to put one apartment on top of another, they might let you build it as long as it's somewhere you can't see from a distance. But building hundreds of tiny houses maybe ten or twelve feet apart, each with its own (cinderblock) fenced yard (no grass) and driveway, is OK. That's the American dream: Levittown in the desert.

That Wikipedia article you linked to is fascinating. Apparently, a bunch of scholars believe that when people started to be categorized by race at all, Irish, Italians and Jews were considered white. I’ve always been a bit puzzled by that. My favorite quote: “During the 19th century, the United States Bureau of Immigration had classified Jews as "Slavonic...a subgroup of the elite Aryan stock",
