I love the idea of Paper Airplane but like a lot of ideas I love, I wasn't sure I'd go so far as to pay for it. (I ain't rolling in dough.)
That they gave you the issue as part of a launch fundraiser for a cause I wanted to support (but had not heard of before!) made the difference and got me to pony up. Useful intelligence perhaps -- I'll tell them, too.
Didn't hurt that I trust your judgement. (the magazine is beautiful.)
On Jaggy Thistle: presumably this describes a thorny thistle plant when it's not the name of a pub or blog or park, where 'jag' is thorn and where we in Pittsburgh get the epithet jagoff, from jagger bush, which is a thorny bush. Lots of Pittsburgh words trace back to the Scots-Irish settlers. Kind of a cool connection.
I'll be going through your links at leisure, but I am gobsmacked, I tell you, to learn that the Bay's rolling fogbank of fond memory has a name. Karl? And it was on Jeopardy? I can't tell you how many nude-beach dates Karl ruined. I hope he's happy.
And I'm sticking my nose in one more time to say I was a fan of "Big Fish," but I had completely forgotten about Karl the giant. A really great, really strange story.
Thank you for that link to more info about Sella's book, which sounds important. It was a good reminder that even books from PRH and its powerful publicity machine can fly under my radar.
Inspired by the thistle, thought you'd be amused by a the name of a pub in Belfast - The Jeggy Nettle. Totally embraced the broad Belfast pronunciation.

It really is gorgeous.
I've loved the story about Dashiell Hammett's role in repurposing "gunsel" ever since I first heard of it years ago.
More goose-related content coming in Monday’s post!

Last time I checked, Karl had 300K+ followers on Twitter.
Gobsmacked.

Very pleased to be mentioned in such wonderful company. Thank you!

I might have missed it myself -- even though I know Shelley -- if not for the event at Clio's, my fantastic neighborhood bookstore.
I had never heard of a paen!
I feel fulfilled.
